Virtual Therapy for OCD, Anxiety, and Related Conditions

At West Coast OCD and Anxiety Clinic, we provide secure virtual therapy for OCD, anxiety disorders, trauma-related conditions, and related concerns across British Columbia. Virtual therapy allows individuals to access specialized, evidence-based care from the comfort and privacy of their own home.

For many people, virtual treatment is not only convenient, it can also be highly effective for conditions involving anxiety, avoidance, compulsions, panic, intrusive thoughts, and trauma responses.

What Is Virtual Therapy?

Virtual therapy (also called online therapy or telehealth therapy) involves meeting with a therapist through a secure video platform using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Sessions are conducted similarly to in-person therapy and may include:

  • Assessment and treatment planning

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

  • Exposure therapy

  • Psychoeducation

  • Skills training

  • Goal-setting and behavioural work

  • Family support sessions

Virtual therapy allows treatment to occur in the environments where symptoms often happen most naturally, including at home, in community settings, or during day-to-day routines.

Is Virtual Therapy Effective?

Yes! Research has consistently shown that virtual ERP and CBT can be highly effective for OCD and anxiety disorders. Many individuals experience outcomes comparable to in-person treatment. Virtual treatment can be especially helpful because it allows therapy to occur directly in real-life settings where symptoms and avoidance patterns happen.

For example:

• ERP for contamination OCD may occur in the home environment

• Panic exposures may be practiced in daily settings

• Social anxiety exposures may occur during real-world interactions

• Phobia treatment can happen in feared environments

• Trauma-related avoidance patterns can be addressed within everyday routines

Rather than discussing situations abstractly, treatment can often be applied more directly and practically.

Benefits of Virtual Therapy

Many clients appreciate the flexibility and accessibility of virtual care.

Potential benefits include:

  • Access to specialized OCD and anxiety treatment across BC

  • Reduced travel time and commuting stress

  • Greater scheduling flexibility

  • Increased privacy and comfort

  • Ability to participate from home or another preferred location

  • Easier integration of therapy into daily life

  • Opportunities for in-the-moment exposure and behavioural work

Virtual care can also improve access for individuals living in rural or underserved communities where specialized OCD and anxiety treatment may not otherwise be available.

What to Expect During Sessions

Virtual sessions are collaborative, structured, and individualized to your goals and symptoms. Treatment may involve:

  • Learning about how anxiety or OCD functions

  • Identifying avoidance or compulsive patterns

  • Practicing new coping and behavioural strategies

  • Completing exposure exercises

  • Building tolerance for uncertainty and discomfort

  • Reducing reassurance-seeking or safety behaviours

  • Working toward meaningful life goals despite anxiety

Sessions are conducted using our secure telehealth platform designed to protect confidentiality and privacy.

Family Involvement and Support

For OCD and anxiety disorders, family members or supports are sometimes included in treatment when appropriate. Family sessions may focus on:

  • Psychoeducation about OCD and anxiety

  • Reducing family accommodation patterns

  • Improving communication

  • Supporting ERP and exposure work at home

Virtual family sessions allow multiple family members to participate together, even from different locations.

Who Is Virtual Therapy a Good Fit For?

Virtual therapy can be a good fit for many individuals experiencing:

  • Intrusive thoughts or compulsions

  • Chronic worry or rumination

  • Panic attacks

  • Social anxiety

  • Avoidance behaviours

  • Trauma-related symptoms

  • Fear of uncertainty

  • Anxiety interfering with work, school, or relationships

  • Specific phobias

Some individuals may initially feel unsure about online therapy, especially if they have never participated in virtual mental health care before. Most people adjust quickly and find the process comfortable and effective over time. Seeking therapy can feel intimidating, especially when anxiety or OCD has been present for a long time. Beginning treatment does not require having everything figured out beforehand.
